"Jim Kyle is a careful man, who inspires confidence about exploring rock-strewn passages that few can navigate. Ben is a younger version, solid and contemplative, with a touch more daring. I'd want to cruise on any boat with a Captain Kyle at the helm."

Our History
Ben & Jim with big salmon haul

Captains Jim and Ben Kyle have extensive local knowledge from decades of working on waters of Southeast Alaska.

Captain's Letter

I've spent forty-three seasons traveling the waters of Southeast Alaska, first as a commercial fisherman and now as a kayak mothership captain. I'm always honored to introduce others to the wild country I've come to know so well.

These days our ship welcomes, instead of fishing crew, a variety of adventurers-families, couples, and individuals of all ages. Together we explore some of the world's most pristine and remote estuaries.

After fishing other boats, I purchased Home Shore in 1984, continuing to harvest Alaska salmon. Two years later my twelve-year-old son Ben joined the fishing crew. Now a licensed captain and kayak guide, he took up adventure paddling in the 1990s-a pursuit that became the springboard for our charter business.

Meanwhile, salmon kept filling our nets, and we looked longingly into secret passages we were too busy to explore. So when the time was right we committed ourselves to a new career, and Home Shore to a new course-as sea kayak mothership.

We are still intrigued each time we glide into a secluded inlet, uninhabited except by wildlife. Even better is confirming that ours is the only boat in sight. But nothing compares to introducing such a scene to awestruck visitors.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard,

Captain Jim Kyle
